Chapter Preview

Martial law is imposed due to the violent clashes in the cities.  Reza leads a raid on a market place and engages in a bloody battle with police.  Mostafa and his men from the underground visit the family bringing photographs, cassettes and documents.  Shah’s control is significantly challenged.

Dialectical Journal

  1. She turned from Farid to directly face her brother. “Are you going to walk us home?” “Not today,” Reza answered.  “Reza!”  Soraya said, fighting her tears, “I don’t feel safe anymore!”
  2. “I fear he is a mad man and his intentions are not for the good of Iran.  Kuwait must have seen that too.” Abbas said.  “But Baba,” Reza whispered, “he says he will make the oil companies share their money with all the families.”   “A man who wants power will say what the people want to hear,” Abbas answered.  

“And these are for you,” Reza emphasized.  “And next time we will get more.”  “Next time,” she said, taking the wilted bunches, “I will go to the market and fill my basket with fresh fruits and berries for the family.” The brothers exchanged a worried look.  Hassan raised an eyebrow.  “I will hope so too,” Reza said.

Literary Connection
